Halfway through the regular track season and the Norwalk High School boys' track team is coming together and consistently improving meet-by-meet. With the post season only three meets away, the Bears' have their sights set on being a highly competitive team to watch out for at the FCIAC and State meets.

"These regular season meets give us an idea of where and what we need to strengthen, and place people in relays and their best individual events," said Norwalk coach Bill Martin. "Things are coming along with the team."

In last Thursday's quad-meet against Westhill, St. Joseph's and Greenwich, the Norwalk boys' put in strong showings in both the track and field events. Malik Miller was the Bears' leading scorer, placing first his two individual events and was a member of the first-place 4 x 400 relay team. Miller dominated the hurdling events, taking the 100 meter hurdles, clocking in at 16.82 seconds as well as the 300 intermediate hurdles, finishing in 43.37 seconds. Miller also took a third place in the 100 meters (11.45).

The 4 x 400 relay team made up of Miller, Jeff Wagner, Dan Conklin and Time Alexis crossed the finish line in 3:42.4, 16 seconds ahead of the second-place Westhill relay team.

great progress throughout the season," Martin said. "His steps in the hurdles are starting to get better and he is getting faster in both hurdling events."

"The team did great today, everyone is doing their best," Miller said. "This is one of the best meets that I've ever run. I could always use more work in getting my steps down in the hurdles. But the atmosphere is great and the team is cheering everyone on."

Wagner also contributed to the Bears' points by placing third in the 1600 meters (4:43.60) and third in the 800 meters (2:15.8). Dan Conklin was a first place finisher in the 400 meters (53.9) and a fifth place finisher in the 800 meters (2:23.7). Time Alexis, who has been plagued by injuries this season and has been limited to one individual event and one relay event per meet, placed second in the 200 meters (23.15) finishing right behind Greenwich's Demetrius Ferguson.

"Dan is a bright light for us in the middle distance events," Martin said. "Many people on the team are stepping up in other areas and contributing points. Ian, a junior, is contributing a lot and stepped up as anchor of the of the spring relay. It says a lot about his abilities if he can anchor a relay on our team."

Norwalk's 4 x 800 relay, made up of Sam Berman, Eddie Fitzgerald, Mike Corsanitti and Taylor Scicchitano finished second in 9:28.00. Berman also came in second in the 800 meters (2:14.4). Corsanitti tied for fifth place in the 3200 meters (11:19.2) with Scicchitano. Fitzgerald placed fourth in the 3200 meters with a time of 11:17.8.

"I am excited to get on with the season," Fitzgerald said. "We won a few early relays, which gave us some points. There are a few standout guys who carry us. I am eager to see how good we can be at FCIAC's."

"We have been facing easier teams so far this season and this meet helped us raise our confidence level. It shows we can beat the bigger, better teams," he added.

Norwalk's Jeff DiSimone dominated the field events, securing a first place in the high jump (5-9) and a fourth place in the triple jump (35-5). Kyle Chu placed second in the triple jump (37-7) while Tyler Garcia placed fifth in the shot put (38-5).

Greg Burnett is an up and coming member of the Bears' team, placing second in the 100 dash (11.39), third in the 200 dash (23.78) and eighth in the long jump (15-10).

Other Bears who contributed to the Bears win over Greenwich and St. Joseph's were Jeremy Dickens [fourth in the 200 dash, 24.06], Ian Martin [fifth in the 200 dash, 24.11] and Jakub Nowicki [third in the 400 meters, 56.7].

"The kids ran very well today, our relays were good too," said Martin. "It was hard to get into the season because the first meet the weather was decent but then it was bad for a few weeks."

Norwalk defeated Greenwich and St. Joseph's, 60-38 and 60-16, respectively.

The Bears will travel to Warde next Tuesday to take on Harding, Danbury and Warde at 4 p.m. The next week, on May 20, Norwalk will compete in a quad-meet with city rival, Brien McMahon, along with Darien, New Canaan and Wilton at 4 p.m. at Wilton High School.
